Presidium Instruments is a worldwide leader in the development and manufacturing of innovative precision jewelry tools since 1979.
As the leading brand in the jewelry industry, Presidium’s products are distributed by more than 150 authorized resellers in 40 countries worldwide, across America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Presidium Instruments has a young, fresh and passionate team. Recently, we have moved into our new modern office in Singapore, providing a great atmosphere to work. We have the ambition to innovate and introduce several new products to the market in the next 5 years.
BACKGROUND
Optical testing has been used as a method to
differentiate between coloured gemstones. Refractometer is such device available
in the market that uses refractivity of material to determine the refractive
index (R.I.) reading of gemstones. However, refractometer uses index matching
liquid to ensure accurate results. Due to its light-bending limitation,
refractometer can only read refractive index up to 1.900 and refractometer is
manually operated by visual inspection. R.I. above 1.900 will not be able to
read by refractometer.
Presidium has devised an optical tester that is able to
go beyond 1.900 using the principle of reflectivity. There is a co-relation
between reflectivity and refractivity. This co-relation is being used to
determine the R.I. reading of gemstones. However, the accuracy is compromised.
PROJECT
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this
project are as follows:
a)
Propose experimental set-up and conduct a study of the effect of
multiple-sensors (array sensors) and single-sensor has on the results of R.I.
reading
b)
Conduct testing and compare the results of array sensors and
single-sensor and provide recommendation of choosing the right sensor
c)
Recommend further testing or propose alternative options to R.I.
testing for improved accuracy
PROJECT
SCOPE & REQUIREMENTS
The focus of this project is to
identify an alternative testing method using optical technology to improve
accuracy of test results, alternative testing includes using an array of sensors
or other means of optical sensor.
Student will be tasked
to:
1) Conduct experiment and collect
experimental data to understand the effects of photo-sensor arrays on refractive
index of gemstones.
2) Conduct experiment and collect experimental data to understand possibility of narrowing down gemstones by applying both physical properties of gemstones.
3) Involve in simple circuit modification from existing circuit design
