The Office of Education Research (OER) was established on 1 April 2008 to forge an NIE-wide programme of research, development and innovation. It facilitates the governance, planning, monitoring, quality assurance and dissemination of education research across the Institute.
Another key function of OER is to administer the Education Research Funding Programme (ERFP), a pool of research funds provided by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore.
The Research and Development Framework forms the basis of the research conducted at NIE. This policy-driven, evidence-based framework guides academic and research staff as they work together to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Singapore schools and to enhance NIE's standing as a leading international research institution.
The Education and Cognitive Development Lab (ECDL) at the National Institute of Education is looking for job seekers to join an energetic and productive research team working under the direction of Dr Rebecca Bull.
Research Study:
Preschool Impact upon Child Outcomes: A Longitudinal Study of Transition from Preschool to Primary.
In this study, we focus on overall measure of quality of children’s learning experiences. We will measure children’s numeracy skills, literacy skills, self-regulation skills and socio-emotional skills through different assessments.
Job Description
•The main role of a research assistant is to collect data from preschool students. Research assistants will administer different type of assessments on preschool students.
-The assessments include computer-based and pen-and-paper assessments.
For computer-based assessments, research assistants will show a child how to play the computer games and provide instructions. Then the research assistant will monitor the child while he/she plays the games and take down notes of the child's scores. For example, we have different computer games where children have to recall numbers, recognise the difference between shapes and numbers, recall pictures of animals and many more.
-2 days of paid training will be provided prior to data collection.Each training session will take about 4 hours.
•Assisting with other project-related duties.
Minimum Requirements
•Must be Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident
-Must be able to speak in Chinese/Malay/Tamil
•Flexible work schedule and open for discussion (5 days per week)
•Must be able to work in different locations: NIE office in Boon Lay and kindergartens all around Singapore. (80% field work in kindergartens, 20% office work in NIE). Transport claims for bus and MRT will be provided. More explanations will be given during the training workshop.
