Once again, InternSG gets the chance to interview professionals in interesting industries for our Career Write-up article series, and this time we are happy to feature our interview with Sam Goh. Sam is the founder and executive wealth coach from Wisdom Capital and organizes financial and investment planning seminars and workshops. If you want to grow your wealth from a young age, Sam is definitely someone to speak to and hear from.
[InternSG] The young people these days have tonnes of things to do outdoors and on their lap to fiddle with as well, i.e. iPad, iPhone and etc…. How would you grab their attention when it comes to serious stuff that concerns their financial future?
[SAM] Well, everybody only lives once in a lifetime. I suppose all of us (including myself) will probably seek to pursue a reasonable standard of living that is deemed to be comfortable by our own definition. Therefore, in the quest to achieve a comfortable and reasonable standard/way of life, acquiring financial freedom then becomes an important determinant in this journey (An important determinant BUT not the ONLY determinant). So the million dollar question will be as follows: How can we achieve financial freedom effectively and efficiently?
In my humble opinion, I feel the key to achieve financial freedom will be to start young and start early. Seek to build up the foundation by securing a strong savings and once you do so, the process of wealth creation can begin. As we progress and grow older, our obligations and commitments will increase (Marriage, Children etc). These obligations and commitments require a considerable amount of financial resources that justify the need for an individual to start young and early. This is usually the approach that I will use to capture and grab the youth’s attention on serious matters that concern their financial future.
[InternSG] How would you describe yourself when you were a student and what are some of the positive values that have helped you become a young ambassador for Monetary Authority of Singapore?
[SAM] Frugal, determined and hardworking are three adjectives that I would use to describe myself when I was a student during my Polytechnic days as well as my current stint at SMU. I would like to believe that these three values played an influential role in assisting me to clinch the MAS MoneySENSE Youth Excellence Award back then in 2006 to qualify myself as one of the youth ambassador under the program. These three values continue to play an instrumental role today as I embark on my journey to build a successful business and promote true financial literacy. Being frugal has enabled me to lay out a strong financial foundation that provides me with the required monetary resources to create and accumulate wealth. This is one of the value propositions that I will always seek to impart to all my seminar graduates and/or participants – Prudent Money Management.
[InternSG] Do you consider yourself a public figure having published articles and being featured in newspapers like The Sunday Times, Lianhe Zaobao and NTUC Lifestyle magazine?
[SAM] I do not consider myself as a public figure despite having published articles and having had the opportunities to be featured in a number of traditional publication mediums. Instead, I see myself as someone who is a strong advocate for financial literacy. The primary reason is because I firmly believe that acquiring proper financial education is probably the best investment that any individual can undertake in his/her quest to achieve financial freedom and the individual’s life goals.
[InternSG] Why didn’t you pursue a career in a bank with your financial knowledge?
[SAM] I did consider pursuing a career in a bank. In fact, I would like to acquire more corporate exposure sometime in the future via means of a career in the banking industry. However, at present, the opportunity to build a business and do something that I have a deep passion and interest in is probably too good to give it a miss. I consider promoting and advocating true financial literacy as one of my favourable “hobbies” and “interests”.
[InternSG] For the benefit of our female readers, are you single and still available? What do you look for in a partner?
[SAM] I am single and available currently. I think a pleasant lady with intelligence and inner beauty would very much appeal to me.
[InternSG] Last question; is there a message that you want our readers to remember?
[SAM] Acquiring proper financial education is one of the best investments that an individual should undertake in his or her quest to achieve investment success and financial freedom. Start young, start early and do not be afraid of committing mistakes. Make a conscientious effort to acquire financial knowledge before you start investing or trading.
